The abundance of user-generated content collected through social platforms demands new advances in computational methods that are able to handle large volumes of streaming data and at the same time are able to make sense of data in a way that is interpretable from a human perspective. The long-term research objective of the Laboratory for Systems, Software and Semantics (LS3) is to develop (1) scalable, and (2) semantics-aware data and information processing techniques that would be appropriate for Web and social media scale content. Our research program will continue to enable the unsupervised extraction of knowledge and actionable insights from highly unstructured Web and social content, which can then be seamlessly indexed, searched and retrieved.
LS3’s research encompasses four major areas, namely:
